The City of Fairfax has officially begun work on the Blenheim Boulevard (formerly Old Lee Highway) Multimodal Improvements Project, with construction activity now underway near Fairfax High School.
Initial work includes the removal of trees along the corridor. These trees will be replaced with new plantings as part of the final landscaping plan, which is designed to enhance safety, aesthetics, and environmental sustainability.
The Blenheim Boulevard Multimodal Improvements project is the reconstruction of Blenheim Boulevard between Layton Hall Drive and Ridge Avenue to include sidewalks on both sides of the roadway, a two-way cycle track on the north side, and upgraded bus stops and shelters throughout the project area. The number of roadway lanes will stay the same, but additional turn lanes have been added in a few locations.
The project will include:
• A two-way, 10-foot-wide bike path on the north side of Blenheim Boulevard
• A 5-foot-wide sidewalk on the south side
• New lighting, bus shelters, and pedestrian safety enhancements
• Additional landscaping and tree planting throughout the corridor
Importantly for Fairfax High School and the surrounding community, the project also features the development of a new outdoor classroom space and community amphitheater near the school. This space will serve both educational and community purposes and provide new opportunities for outdoor learning and public events.
This work is part of a larger city initiative to improve multimodal transportation connections between Old Town Fairfax and Fairfax Circle. The construction around Fairfax High School is expected to continue through the coming months, with periodic updates provided by the City of Fairfax Department of Public Works.
