City of Fairfax Superintendent Dr. Phyllis Pajardo updated the City School Board on the renaming process of Lanier MS at their Regular School Board Meeting on Monday, October 5. The Board voted in September to change the name of Lanier MS due to Sidney Lanier's ties to the Confederate Army.
After receiving almost 300 submissions from the public, Dr. Pajardo worked with the City of Fairfax Historical Resources department and her Superintendent Advisory Team to narrow the list for the Board. On Monday Dr. Pajardo proposed the following six names:
- Maya Angelou Middle School
- City Middle School
- Fairfax Woods Middle School
- Independence Middle School
- Katherine Johnson Middle School
- Legacy Middle School

The School Board is not required to choose from the suggested names proposed by Dr. Pajardo. They will vote on a new name on Monday, November 2, 2020 at their Regular School Board Meeting.
