One Percent Sales Tax Information

On Tuesday, November 3, City of Fairfax voters will consider whether to authorize City Council to levy a general retail sales tax not to exceed 1% to provide revenue solely for eligible capital projects involving the construction or renovation of schools, public transportation purposes, or both. Such tax revenue could also be used for related bond and loan financing costs.

Approval of the referendum would not automatically impose the tax.  The referendum would authorize the City Council to levy the tax at a rate not to exceed 1%, as determined by City Council.  City voters will decide whether to grant such authority to City Council.

If approved by voters and subsequently implemented by City Council, the tax is estimated to generate approximately $13.5 million annually.  Any sales tax revenue allocated by City Council for school purposes could be used to reduce the amount of other City revenues (such as real estate taxes) that may otherwise be needed to pay the costs of school projects or to pay debt service on City bonds to be issued for such projects.
