City of Fairfax Schools Superintendent Ann Monday to Retire
City of Fairfax Schools Superintendent Ann Monday announced today she will retire effective June 30, 2012. Ms. Monday has been the Superintendent since July 2007 after working for 35 years in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).
“It’s been an honor working with such talented and passionate School Board members, principals, City and school staff members,” said Monday. “I am extremely proud of the City of Fairfax schools, and I know the students will continue to thrive.”
During Ms. Monday’s tenure, she helped to close-out the renovations of Lanier Middle School and Fairfax High Schools and presided over the rededications of these state-of-the-art facilities. She worked collaboratively with FCPS not only to maintain school buildings, but also to support principals as they worked to close achievement gaps and provide quality learning experiences for all students. The City Board has provided after-school and summer learning programs, SAT preparation online, classroom technology, teacher training opportunities and other resources that have had a positive impact on student achievement over the past five years.
Monday began her career as an English teacher. She then worked as a school-based administrator at Marshall High School, Lake Braddock Secondary School, Fairfax High School and Robinson Secondary School. She was the principal at Longfellow Middle School and Robinson Secondary School, where she was responsible for over 4000 students and 300 staff members.
In 2003, Ms. Monday became the Cluster VI Superintendent for FCPS and oversaw 24 elementary and secondary schools. She later became the FCPS Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, responsible for all instructional programs from pre-kindergarten through adult education. Monday left FCPS to become the City of Fairfax Superintendent.
“Ann Monday has been a stellar employee and the school board is sad to see her go,” said Janice Miller, chairman of the City of Fairfax Schools. “While Ann will be difficult to replace, we are fortunate she will be an active participant in choosing a new superintendent and has committed to a seamless transition. We thank her for her tireless service, commitment to City of Fairfax students and wish her all the best retirement has to offer. Ann Monday will be missed by all.”
